We asked the first people who bought a set why they did it. Almost nobody said astronomy. Here is what they actually said.
For a child who just found out the Moon is real
There is a particular age, somewhere around six, when a child works out that the Moon is a place and not a picture. Give them a crater with their own name on it and a pair of binoculars and you will not get them back indoors for a week.
For someone who is gone
A surprising number of dedications are memorials. A crater is permanent in a way that almost nothing on Earth is, it is visible from every country, and it asks nothing of anyone. We handle these quietly and we never publish them without being asked.
For the person who has everything
They do not have a crater. This is the entire pitch and it works every time.
For a beginning
Weddings, new houses, new names, sobriety dates, the day someone came out. People mark beginnings by writing them somewhere that will outlast the feeling.
For yourself
Roughly a third of our dedications are people naming a crater after themselves, and we think that is excellent. Put your name on something 240,000 miles away and the week you are having gets smaller.
